Why the Dominican Republic works so well from New York

The practical case is strong. Direct flights from JFK reach Punta Cana International Airport in under four hours, and the airport sits roughly 15 minutes from the Cap Cana enclave where most luxury weddings take place. For guests, that means a same-day arrival with no connection — a meaningful factor when you are asking 80 people to travel.

The result is a genuine destination wedding that behaves logistically like a domestic one. It is why the Northeast is such a large share of the brides I work with.

What New York brides underestimate about the climate

This is the single biggest adjustment, and it affects beauty more than anything else.

A look that performs beautifully at a Manhattan engagement party in November is built for dry, cool, indoor air. Punta Cana is warm and humid year round. The same products, applied the same way, behave differently: bases break down faster, hair loses its shape, and anything heavy shows more in bright natural light.

The practical consequence is that your usual routine — and often your usual artist — is not automatically transferable. The technique has to change: thinner layers, long-wear formulas, a luminous finish set in stages, waterproof definition, and frizz-resistant styling. This is the main reason I recommend a locally-based artist who works in this climate constantly rather than flying someone in.

Skin also behaves differently. Many brides arriving from a New York winter find their skin reacts to the humidity — sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Arriving two or three days early gives your complexion time to settle before the wedding.

When should a New York bride do the preview session?

For most of my New York brides, the preview happens after arrival, two or three days before the wedding. That is late by domestic standards, and it works well for a specific reason: it lets us see how your skin and hair actually behave in the Caribbean, which is information a New York trial cannot give us.

The look itself is agreed long before that, through a video consultation months earlier. The in-person preview refines and confirms rather than starting from scratch — so nothing important is left to the final week.

If you happen to visit the Dominican Republic beforehand — a venue visit, for instance — that trip is an excellent opportunity to fold in the preview earlier.

A realistic planning timeline from New York

The rhythm that works, running backward from the wedding:

Around nine to twelve months out, enquire and secure your artist, particularly for dry-season dates. Six months out, hold a video consultation to discuss your gown, setting, and the mood you want. Three months out, begin your skin preparation in earnest. In the final month, avoid anything new — no first-time facials or products. Then arrive two to three days early, hold the preview session, and let your skin settle.
