The Setting Sprays I Use on Every Caribbean Bride
The best setting spray for wedding makeup in a humid climate is rarely a single product. I layer two: one that binds every layer of makeup together and keeps a natural glow, then one built for longevity. A third, mattifying spray handles touch-ups later in the day without anyone touching the bride's face.
Setting spray is the last step of my application and, in Dominican Republic heat, one of the most important. These are the exact bottles in my kit, how I use each one, and what they do differently.
Why does setting spray matter so much in the Caribbean?
In a humid climate, makeup is attacked from two directions: moisture in the air from outside, and warmth and oil from the skin underneath. Powder alone sets the surface, but it does not hold the layers together. A good setting spray fuses base, cream textures, and powder into one flexible film, so the look moves with the face instead of breaking apart on it.
It is the reason a look built in thin layers can last from a morning first look to the last dance. The spray does not replace good technique — it locks it in.
My layering routine, step by step
Step one is always the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. This is the classic: it binds every layer of makeup together, leaves the skin with a soft glow and a natural finish, and fixes the look in place. It also has a delicate, luxurious scent, which brides notice on a nervous morning more than you might expect.
Step two is the ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr On 'Til Dawn Setting Spray — my insurance policy. It gives serious staying power, and I personally use it on every single bride after the Charlotte Tilbury, to be certain. The first spray gives the finish; the second makes sure it survives the day.
What if you plan to end the night in the pool?
The Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is the good old classic, and I can vouch for it personally: I tested it by jumping into a pool. So if you are planning to end your celebration in style — a midnight swim, a jump into the resort pool, or a shower of champagne on the dance floor — this is the one you want.
Which spray is best for touch-ups on oily skin?
The ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Oil Sucker Liquid Blotting Paper Touch Up Spray is the newest permanent resident in my kit, and it has changed how I do touch-ups. I simply spray it on: it absorbs the oil on the face and leaves a velvety finish in a second. For humid weather and skin prone to oiliness, it is exactly what is needed.
The real advantage is what it removes from the process. There is no touching the face and no disturbing the makeup, the way blotting papers used to, and no carrying brushes and powder through a wedding day. One spray between the ceremony and the reception and the bride is ready for photographs again.
A note on photographs: skin should not look too shiny on camera. Photographers do not like it, and neither does the camera — strong shine reads as grease rather than glow, especially under flash. Luminous is beautiful; oily is not. This spray is how I keep that line.
And one I am testing now
There is a new version of the On 'Til Dawn spray with SPF — the same formula as the one above, with sun protection added. For an outdoor Caribbean ceremony, that combination is very appealing. It is a new release; I have just ordered it to test, and I will only recommend it to brides once I have worked with it myself.

Frequently asked
- Can you use two setting sprays at once?
- Yes, and in humidity I recommend it. I apply a finishing spray first, then a longevity spray on top. Let the first one dry before the second.
- Will setting spray make my skin look shiny in photos?
- A luminous spray gives glow, not grease. If your skin tends to become oily in the heat, a mattifying spray during the day keeps the finish velvety for the camera.
- Does setting spray replace powder?
- No. Powder sets specific areas; setting spray holds all the layers together. They work as a team, and a mattifying spray can replace powder for touch-ups.
- Can setting spray survive swimming?
- A waterproof formula like Urban Decay All Nighter survived my pool test. Even so, if water photographs are planned, schedule them for the end of the night.
- Should a bride carry setting spray on her wedding day?
- A mattifying touch-up spray such as the Oil Sucker is the most useful thing to carry: it refreshes the look without touching the face. If your artist stays for touch-ups, she will handle it for you.
The products matter, but so does how they are layered for your skin and your day. If you would like a look built to last through Caribbean heat — luminous, never oily, and unmistakably you — you are warmly invited to begin privately. Every enquiry is answered personally.
